In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) a pandemic.

In the face of this health crisis, we are amazed by the acts of kindness we are seeing across the region. Neighbours helping neighbours with groceries and supplies. Grassroots groups are supporting strangers as people voluntarily self-isolate and practice social distancing to protect the broader community.

As you care for your family and those closest to you, we urge you to think of those who may need support while in self-isolation. Everyone has an important role to play.

During this time of a global pandemic, we know that many may not be able to afford to adequately prepare for how COVID-19 will affect their family. Many do not have a support system around them if they need to self-isolate, if they become ill, or if they can no longer work.

Food donations are declining, there are fewer volunteers to support food assistance programs, and with increasing need on the horizon our food bank system is on the verge of a very real crisis.

People who live in poverty, seniors and many others are at-risk. Mental health challenges are affecting us all. And those incredible volunteers – those generous people who are out there trying to help – they also need our support.

YOU CAN HELP

  • Share how you are already helping or what needs exist on our Facebook Group called WE COVID Care Coalition
  • Mail or drop off grocery gift cards to the Unemployed Help Centre (6955 Cantelon Dr., Windsor, ON) which will redistribute them to people in need across the community through the food bank association network. Call ahead to ensure someone is available to meet you before you come. (519-944-4900)
